Hello,
Forget about the $500- your FRIEND's one.
Save few hundred, may waste more than that in the future.
Yes, 4020 makes good espresso.
Needs 600N at least or Mazzer SJ, Mini E-A or E-B.
Better get correct size tamper and the extra Basket.

But from what I know that the 4020 is quite new becuase my friend bought it in January of this year. He sells me this just because he is losing the interest of making coffee.

What is a basket is? filter = basket?

If your friend's 4020, he/she does agree to send to Krups service center to have a overhaul check. Then it is much more fair to each parties;
since if the machine breaks down in the near future, it's your bad luck.
If no problem after check , then OK la, you save some $. Fair to you and your friend.

Think 1 Think you want a good espresso only or you enjoy to play the machine too.

Hello LK-435,
I guess you fans have 600N grinder.
Basic technique is find the correct grind setting to get 25-30cc within 27 seconds. ** I always not count the time, but see the colour of the espresso to stop brewing.
I think 1.6-1.8 should be the best grind setting of 600N for 4020.
DON'T forget to use a digital scale to measure the weight. It is a MUST for beginner I suggest. I forgot the weight for 4020, ask ZING is a good idea.
Tamp properly. Try which way is the most comfortable and suitable for you.
I always flush the machine for few seconds to prevent over heat = turn the brewing button on BEFORE put the ready filter and basket with coffee on the machine until you see the ready light has been just off THEN TURN THE BUTTON OFF. Wait for the machine rebound and the ready light tells you she is ready, lock the filter on and start brewing.
Use this complicated method to do, the result, I got is better than use a P.I.D.ed Rancilio Silvia to make espresso with Rocky.
$1830 WON $6000-+ NOT ONLY MY OPINION - *****One of my great coffee/espresso master always says this.
Now I am excepting he modifies 600N to be a lower speed and improves the disability of 600N performance.
(Time to do something practical to improve REAL thing NOT the 1-2 degree of water)
** Some advice and theory from the super coffee website may know a little bit or have it for reference, otherwise, WE need to invest much more $ to meets what they says GOOD ENOUGH.
Technique is the most important part to make good espresso.
Fresh roast beans ( I love beans after roasted 3days ~ 10days ).
Appropriate grind coffee. ( at least, a very very good coffee mill can help too - or 600N is more convenience to set the correct grind )
+ Stable and appropriate temperature of good fresh filtered water.
Saved money and have a better result.
***May be there costs you more beans to learn from the processing.
Don't give up. After you got it; Not many cafe outside can satisfy you - Espresso.
Good Luck to your espresso making.
SORRY TO TELL A METHOD SUCH COMPLICATED.
But Sounds complicated from the beginning; when you get used to do it.
No problem and No complicated at all.
BTW, I forgot to suggest you and friends to buy a * Brita filter jug from Jusco or CitySuper to provide a good quality water for your espresso and protect your machine.

I seldom post now.

Under the "freshness" circumference. Espresso is quite simple.
To brew a good espresso you have to yield 30cc, 25sec espresso.
To do this, it is basically about technique.


First what you have to do is to keep the dose(the amount of coffee you put in) constant (if you've got a very very good grinder, it works even as low as 4g. but i'd suggest 14g for you since consumer grinders don't grind very very well), this is very very important since dose change the flow speed. This can be achieved by a digital scale but after your skill is stable you can put the scale into the drawer.

The second you have to do is to adjust the grind into a 25second, 30cc shot. Flow speed too fast, adjust finer. Flow speed too slow, adjust coarser.

Take away the cup when you see the dark brown/red stream of espresso change into kind of golden color.

This is pretty enough.


BTW, go to landy's shop and let them show you how to do.

You both are saying 'get 25-30cc in abt 25sec'. For '25sec', i understand that it's talking abt the time to make a cup. However, for '25-30cc', what is it? Does it mean the amount of water to make a espresso?? And, is '1cc' = '1ml'? Please explain.

I would like to know how many g of coffee bean does a cup of espresso need? By the way, is it a digital scaler is required to measure the weight of coffee beans? I got a simple scaler already.

Does it mean the amount of water to make a espresso? No, it means the volume of the espresso, including the coffee liquid and crema. Please buy a scale cup from Landy, or anywhere. It's cheap.

how many g of coffee bean does a cup of espresso need? It varies from machine to machine, beam to beam. As K? said, just start your trial at 14g.

is it a digital scaler is required? It depends on the habit. I use a tiny, cheap cheap, digital scale, its accuracy up to +/- 0.2g.
