Yes, good espresso really requires a high quality grinder which allows fine control of grind settings.
0.5 mark very roughly represents 10 seconds of difference, depending on the combination of coffee benas and roasting; and 1 mark represent a quite large difference. You should be able to do this with your grinder, with just a slight turn of the knob.
Since you have clear markings available on your grinder, you may try to time the coffee extraction process for 30 cc. I suggest changing the know by 0.25 or 0.33 mark everytime, so that you can have a better idea how much time is needed to extract 30 cc of coffee for a particular amount coffee beans (e.g. 18g) under a certain roasting configuration (e.g. Full City), and under the usage of a certain basket (e.g. double basket), certain brewing temperature (e.g. 89 degrees) and a certain tamping pressure.
In my opinion, although the timing is easy to use and easy to measure, it should be treated as one of the references only, so that you know if the grinding setting is on the right track or not. For example, you may have +/- few seconds for extraction and still get excellent coffee extraction. |
