Two suggestions:
1. RO may decrease the rate of scaling but not eliminate it. It is not recommended to use RO or distilled water to brew coffee or tea as they taste dull.
2. You have to overhaul the machine to thoroughly descale it.

I think the heading of this video said "Descaling for HX machine", the Expobar is not an HX machine.
You must be very careful in considering descaling, one question to wonder: how can you be sure of the complete removal of that chemical you put in the water? And if it's not completely removed, can you imagine yourself drinking "that" into your stomach (I haven't even mention the taste of that chemical yet)?
Well, if according to Shing ?, we need to regenerate once a month with salt. It's a bit troublesome, but it saves so much more trouble in the end! And since your machine is new, plus you are using filtered water, you don't have to worry about descaling just yet la. Just worry about making good espresso ... which is a much wider area to explore! |

This is about de-scaling but your video link refers to a heat exchange (HX) machine.
As per my understanding, it is not easy to de-scale the Expobar machine, though you can do it. The procedure for descaling should be more complicated than the one shown in your attached video link.
The main issue is: the dual-boiler of Expobar is in vertical position. When you put the decaling solution (e.g. citric acid etc) to the water tank, the boiler may take in part of the solution which may reside in the top part of the boiler. To completely remove this residual water inside the boiler, you'll have to empty the boiler by opening up the boilers to let the water out. And what may be more complicated is that you may need to repeat this procedure several times until the corresponding minerals have been dissolved. You may be able to find more details from the Expobar user forum (including how the electric cables can be detached etc.).
That's why in my opinion, it may be more cost and time effective if you keep the good water filter system + refreshing the water softening filter (the one that needs to be soaked in salt water once a while), so that you can greatly reduce the need of descaling. And if descaling is really needed in the future, you do a real descaling then (I guess you need to do that once every few years only if you're just a home user)! |
