There are numerous discussions here on the hardware but not so many on the basket design.
I have been using the filter landy supplied along with my gaggia classic (it's a curved sides basket, it curves in at the bottom), it worked out pretty well. After a little while i purchased a bottomless filter and it came with a straightwall basket, that's when chaos began. With such a subtle difference, my shots went from decent to chaotic. uneven extraction here and there, coffee jets out from different direction. i had spent bags of beans of trying and i still couldnt have any success. So i gave up on it and switched back to the curved wall basket with the naked handle.
are you using a curved wall basket or a straight wall one ? how are they different ?
do the numbers of holes and sizes matter much in the extraction ? |

in theory and ideal world, straight wall gives a more uniform extraction.
but in real world, it's just different. imho, not good or bad, depends on beans/grinder/machine, you have to try.
and the VST baskets.. they have some ideas in mind when it was designed. check James Hoffmann's blog he have some insights. _________________ ???? |
