By the way,
if you are drinking Long Black, there are actually two ways to brew.

1. a 180cc espresso in 25sec.
2. 30cc normal espresso in 25sec, then dilute it with 150cc water.

The first one is usually defined as Cafe Crema.
The second one is Americano.
Both of them are called long black though. Smile

Wahhh. That part is interesting and it is the first time I know how to make an americano. If I buy take-away from starbucks or Pacific coffee I usually order americano but never know how that make it. Great. Thx kckc.

But another problem come. By XP4050 is a single button machine. That mean I can only use default cc of water or user-defined cc of water. Now I know why people like 4020 more than 4050 lar......Very Happy

i think you can reset the amounts of water.. some of the people here are using the 4050.. they should know how to do it..

Agree. And that's why easy to buy is a good selling point for those coffee-making beginner.

I didn't try the blend. Just tried the "Espresso" and "Italian Roast" from starbucks only. Which bean that is not too sour (better not sour) can recommended to me? I drink black all the time.

Beside, kckc mentioned that "espresso in 25sec" twice. I don't think my XP4050 finish a standard volume of coffee with 25sec. (Should be less...than 20 secs)
So, if 25sec is the best, do I need to ??? If yes, how? Please advise.

hi,
yes, but not a must.
25sec -30sec is a normal range for espresso extraction time.
traditionally, a single espresso is extracted in 25sec, and 30cc volume.

no, you don't need to ??, you should adjust your grinder a click finer.


rule of thumb,
if the espresso extracts out too fast(less than 25sec), adjust the grinder finer or lower the amount of coffee you put in.
if the espresso extracts out too slow(more than 30sec), adjust the grinder coarser or up the amount of coffee you put in.(aka dosage)

both the dosage and the finess of the ground coffee affect your extraction speed, the grind affect more and make a bigger impact, so one should adjust the grinder first, than the dosage.




em,,, further more, after getting the grind right one should experiment the dosage to get the desire flavour. the dosage is a way to control the next point.
the time from the pump starts to the first drop appears(aka dwell time) is very critical, it affects the flavour very much.


unstructured, complicated, without photos, unregulated grammar.

any coffee more or less than 25-30sec don't seems balance, or if balance, it lacks body.

So, buy a new temper, use fresh bean and adjust the volume of coffee powder is easy. I will try it the coming every round.

But few more questions want to clarify although I may not do it at this stage:
