Horizontal channeling is usually caused by dosing problems. How do you do the dosing? |

1. Give about 13.5 - 13.7g (for XP4020)
2. Put tamper on top of the coffee powder gently by two fingers
3. use fingers to press and position the tamper, then check flatness.
4. Tamp at about 30lb.
5. Gently hit the side of the portafilter
6. re-tamp at lighter weight (may be 20lb).
Is this ok? |

Step 2 may be a possible reason for uneven pressure of the coffee ground. If possible, try not to press down the coffee ground. If you want to level the coffee ground, try to move in horizontal positions only (e.g. north/south, east/west), and let the coffee ground fill in the gaps within the basket. For any extra coffee ground left on top, dispose it (so as to see if the channeling problem can be fixed).
You may also skip step 5 (which is very controversial, as this so-called gentle hit may introduce cracking of the coffee puck) to see what would happen. |
